The award presentation began with a tribute led by Viola Davis, who actually won Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for Fences earlier in the night. Davis, who co-starred in Doubt with Streep, amusingly impersonated the actress, but also quite seriously praised her acting talent. “I can only imagine where you go, Meryl, when you disappear into a character,” Davis said.
The actress’ latest nomination comes for Best Actress in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Florence Foster Jenkins. She’s previously won eight times, dating back to 1979. As the Cecil B. DeMille Award recipient, she follows Denzel Washington (2015), George Clooney (2014), Woody Allen (2014), and Jodie Foster (2013).
