York City-based designer Sophie Theallet is owing not to dress incoming First Lady Melania Trump, and urges the entire fashion community to follow her example.
In letter e-mailed to members of the fashion community and posted to her Instagram page, Theallet says that she cannot accept the anti-immigration platform on which Mrs. Trump’s husband ran: “As one who celebrates and strives for diversity, individual freedom and respect for all lifestyles, I will not participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next First Lady,” Theallet wrote. “The rhetoric of racism, sexism, and xenophobia unleashed by her husband’s presidential campaign are incompatible with the shared values we live by. I encourage my fellow designers to do the same.”
The designer states that her brand “stands against all discrimination and prejudice. Our runway shows, ad campaigns, and celebrity dressing have always been a celebration of diversity and a reflection of the world we live in.”
The designer ended her open letter to the industry by writing, “Integrity is our only true currency.”
